Mariya H. (38), a Ukrainian national, pleaded guilty to brothel keeping at an apartment in Carrick-on-Shannon in December 2010. The court heard she was contacted by an undercover Garda who she brought back to her apartment and was then arrested. Her solicitor apologised, said she had only resorted to this out of financial desperation and that nothing had happened. He said she had 3 children back home to support and was a chef by profession. The judge adjourned the case saying he wanted more information, that she was not working as a chef currently and cannot continue in the business in which Gardaí found her, that he wants to know she is finished with this endeavour. At a later court date Mariya H. was given the Probation Act. The court heard she was married to an Irish national. She apologised and said she would not engage in the activity again. A Garda witness said she had no previous convictions and her offending was “the lower end of the scale”.
